AC Cars is one of the UK's oldest independent car manufacturers and is about to deliver the first electric version of its classic series 1 Cobra to customers. The AC Cobra is a legendary two-seater sports car from the 1960s, which was reborn through an electric power system. AC Cars now combines its famous history with the future, opening the next chapter of electrification for this well-known brand.
AC Cars was originally established in 1901, but it was not officially registered as Auto Carriers Ltd. until ten years later. After more than a century of liquidation and name change, AC Cars continued to exist as a privately owned independent car manufacturer.
The original AC Cobra was born in the early 1960s to compete with Chevrolet Corvette. Carroll Shelby proposed to AC Cars the idea of installing a small Ford V8 engine in the automaker's existing Ace chassis.
The result was a sports car demon that could reach nearly 200 miles per hour. Before Shelby sold the name of the Cobra to Ford in 1965, it was very popular...and then more successful races and even biopics.
AC Cars now hopes to regain this revolutionary spirit of innovation by redesigning its famous classic model into a zero-emission version, starting with the Series 1 electric Cobra.
The term "classic electric car" feels like a juxtaposition of such a young market segment in the automotive world, but this is exactly what AC Cars created.
In a recent press release issued by the automaker, the electric version of its Series 1 Cobra is undergoing final development and will soon be delivered to the first customers.
After facing delays caused by supply chain issues, the AC Cars engineering team was able to integrate higher-performance components in the electric cobra, improving specifications such as weight, handling and acceleration. According to the release:
Nearly 60 years later, the transition from gasoline engines to electric motors will be as important as the initial epiphany, enabling this famous British brand to sell very popular high-performance cars suitable for the future.

AC Cars will only produce 58 Series 1 electric Cobras to commemorate the production of the first Cobra 60 years ago.
Last month, AC Cars revealed its plans to launch the electric Series 4 Cobra next, and continue to promote the development of a series of new/old electric vehicles.
