UTV owners have one more reason to get out and ride, as the PedalMAX Terrain from JMS Chip & Performance turns that vague throttle feel into a razor-sharp experience of feeling direct power input.

Anyone who’s spent some time behind the wheel of an UTV, is probably familiar with the throttle sensitivity issues these vehicles harbor when compared to, say the finely-tuned 4×4 machines like the new Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler. These sorts of precision problems are not so much of a “flat-out” affair, but are more of a lower speed issue, when exact throttle inputs are more mandatory.

Forever looking to give UTV owners the upper hand, JMS opted to push the power pendulum in both directions. Drivers can own the ability to adjust throttle sensitivity on the fly either up or down. The simple knob twist clockwise will increase sensitivity, or it can be detuned depending on the settings. Once installed and calibrated, the JMS PedalMAX Terrain controller gives UTV enthusiasts the ability to lower throttle response levels as low as 50% below stock sensitivity, or go as high as 400% if so inclined.

The low-gear, rock-crawling scenarios certainly come to mind when lowered sensitivity settings are mentioned. JMS claims that it also has ulterior motives in mind by lowering the power spectrum.

Fledgling UTV enthusiasts are forever eager to over-throttle and flat foot it. This not only opens them to a massive margin of error, but it also unnecessarily burns fuel, and can be dangerous to those around them. By “dumbing-down” the throttle a tad, beginners can more safely and affectively gain an understanding of what a UTV has to offer.

While safely navigating treacherous and highly technical terrain requires precisely timed and applied throttle inputs, kicking things up a notch is why most UTV owners will purchase a PedalMAX Terrain setup. Not only does it make UTV shenanigans more engaging, but it also provides a much needed boost to those who may be hauling gear or passengers.

As for the actual act of  adjusting performance “on-the-fly,” PedalMAX Terrain allows operators to increase and decrease throttle sensitivity via the mere twist of a knob. Thanks to its durable rubberized shell, the control box of each JMS PedalMAX Terrain unit is completely waterproof, and impervious to virtually any form of grime that could find its way inside. JMS even took the extra step, and made the knob removable, for those who might be interested in locking-in a specific sensitivity setting.

This is where you will be able to tap the JMS PedalMAX Terrain electronic throttle controller into the factory pedal position sensor port.

When it comes to installing a JMS PedalMAX Terrain throttle controller, you’ll find it to be about as plug-and-play as it gets.

This is due in part to the system’s inline connector, which taps into the factory pedal position sensor. You can typically find the position sensor on the side of the accelerator pedal. Once the connector that taps into the position sensor has been disconnected, simply plug the PedalMAX controller into the factory harness via its male and female plugs. Next move on to affixing the throttle control box.

Installing the control box merely involves finding an ideal piece of real estate for the controller. The connector can be fixed to an area along the firewall with several zip ties or tie-wraps. Finally attaching the control box with either double-sided tape or self-tapping screws would be the last step.

To date, testing has found that the entire range of JMS PedalMAX Terrain control units are compatible with any modern UTV that utilizes a drive-by-wire throttle system.
