The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that Toyota will recall more than 227,000 vehicles due to potential braking hazards. If you own a 2018-2019 Camry, please check your VIN against the NHTSA recall site to see if you need to repair your vehicle.

Toyota announced the recall on November 17, 2021, stating that the affected vehicles “have a system that provides power brake assistance when the driver depresses the brake pedal. Certain components in this part of the system may wear out prematurely and may This results in a sudden loss of power brake assist. Non-power assisted braking will continue to work. However, the sudden loss of power brake assist while driving may increase the risk of collision."

NHTSA pointed out that the "vane cap" inside the pump may break, causing the pump to malfunction.

To solve this problem, Toyota dealers will repair or replace the vacuum pump free of charge as needed. The company will also mail a notification letter to the owner from December 16, 2021. Vehicle owners can call Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Consumers can also visit Toyota.com/recall and enter VIN or license plate information to see if their vehicles may be affected by the recall.

This is one of many recalls implemented by Toyota this year (2021).

On September 2, 2021, the company recalled certain 2018-2021 Toyota Tundra vehicles produced in the United States from June 2017 to March 2021. The recall affects approximately 158,500 vehicles.

The problem is that the vehicle is equipped with halogen headlights, which may overheat and may cause a fire. In some cases, if the high beams remain on for a long time when the vehicle is idling or driving at low speed, the bulb connector may overheat to a certain extent, which increases the risk of fire and may spread to other parts of the vehicle.

Toyota said its dealers will modify the engine wiring harness assembly and inspect the headlight assembly. If any part is found to be damaged due to this overheating condition, the damaged part will be replaced as needed.

The owner should receive the notice before November 1, 2021.

On April 13, 2021, Toyota also recalled approximately 279,000 vehicles due to airbag issues.

The recall affects certain 2009-2015 Toyota Venza vehicles. These vehicles have a sensor on the driver’s front door that is connected to the airbag system control unit via a wire. Over time, one of the wires may break. If this happens, the airbag warning light may come on, and the sensor in the door may not work. This may prevent the side airbags and curtain airbags on the driver's side from deploying in certain types of collisions, thereby increasing the risk of injury.

Toyota said its dealers will check the driver’s front door harness and replace it with a new harness if necessary. The owner should receive the notice before mid-June 2021.
