Ford Mustang recall: Models built between 2015-2017 over backup camera

Ford has recalled more than 330,000 Mustangs to fix an issue with the backup camera, which can cause it to go blank or appear distorted and prevent drivers from seeing obstacles behind them.

The recall, publicized Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects cars produced between 2015 and 2017.

The problem is thought to be caused by an issue with the wiring harness within the decklid, which is between the taillights.

"A loss of electrical conductivity caused by a damaged decklid harness and/or an insufficiently soldered header connector internal to the camera can lead to a loss of rear view image," NHTSA noted.

The recalled wiring harness went into production on Feb. 22, 2014, and was taken out on Oct. 2, 2017. Ford began using the affected cameras on May 12, 2014, and pulled them Feb. 28, 2015. NHTSA estimated 100% of the affected model-year vehicles to be affected.

"Dealers will inspect and repair the decklid wiring harness and/or replace the rearview camera, as necessary, free of charge, NHTSA said in its recall notice. "Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed March 7, 2022."

Second letters will be sent once the remedy is available, NHTSA noted. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S06. NHTSA's recall ID is 22V082000.

Ford said in documents that it knows of two minor crashes and no injuries due to the problem.

Last summer, NHTSA investigated Ford over whether it took too long to respond to a recall of more than 620,000 vehicles over faulty backup cameras, noting that Ford knew about the problem in February 2020 and that it had warned the carmaker multiple times of increasing number of complaints.
